I grew up on Detroit’s east side. As a child, Detroit was distinguished by abysmal national rankings – one of the lowest per capita incomes, one of the highest rates of children living in poverty, and among the greatest numbers of single-parent households. During my childhood, I often witnessed gang fights in my school’s lunchroom or saw the effects of the crack cocaine epidemic while playing outside with friends. I saw grand-scale societal problems that left me with questions of what was possible for my life. It was the selfless heart and listening ear of my Aunt Lillie, who gave up her dreams of becoming a nurse to raise my brother and me, that set me on the path of wanting to help adolescents and young adults recover from the effects of trauma.
I was fortunate enough to graduate from Wayne State University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work. I also have a doctorate in Education. Social work is a helping profession with the primary purpose of improving the overall well-being of others, especially the most vulnerable populations. Educators teach learners of all ages. As a social worker and educator, I consider my clients’ internal struggles and the influences of personal relationships, family history, work, school, and community on the challenges they face. As your therapist, I will create a therapeutic environment where clients feel heard and respected. I will be there to guide you as you consider ways of resolving problems and successfully achieving your goals. I am committed to offering HOPE and strategies for supporting your overall wellness.
